I’m back at the markets

This weekend sees me at my second market post surgery and recovery. I’m still easily tired, but that’s not surprising as my body is still healing.

It’s also almost September and that means you will start to see our Christmas range creeping in to our display.

Remember these lovely ladies from last year? We still have some packs available so they will be making an appearance at the markets soon. I also have some individual Christmas cards that we will be taking to our markets with a special offer attached – you need to visit Hovingham, Sheriff Hutton or Crayke to get them!

All sales from now on will not only keep the business ticking over but will go towards replenishing our Reindeer Stables advent calendars. I’m also hoping to get a new design advent calendar this year, more on that to follow.

So, we’re at Crayke this Saturday and I can’t wait, there’s something special about meeting your customers face to face. Hopefully we will be at an event near you soon!

I had my surgery three weeks ago now

As usual for me, we didn’t follow plan A for long. Everything was going well, we arrived at the brand new surgical centre at our allotted time and I found out I was one of the first in. I met my surgeon and the anaesthetist and then got taken through for keyhole surgery.

Over four hours later I felt the odd sensation of being transferred from one bed to another as someone explained I was being transferred to the larger hospital half an hour away. The ambulance journey was hazy, all I can remember is the cool strip lights in the ceiling and the staff apologising because of a traffic jam which the driver had to get out and manage – very surreal!

It turns out that my planned keyhole surgery quickly turned to major surgery as my gallbladder had healed itself by sticking to anything in its vicinity including my duodenum, stomach, liver etc. I’m forever grateful to my surgeon who persevered rather than putting me back on the waiting list. Can you imagine waking up thinking it’s all over with only to find out nothing had really changed? No, me neither.

Once safely ensconced in the ward bed, I remember my husband and daughter visiting and me struggling to string a coherent sentence together. Apparently 24 hours later I was much better, and that day I had updates from the assisting surgeon (who said it was the worst gallbladder he had seen in his 5 years of surgery) and my lovely surgeon.

The days that followed saw steady improvements and the physio team were happy to send me home. However my temperature started to spike, resulting in a quick backtrack from the planned discharge to ‘we need to investigate what’s going on’. I spent the day crying and feeling sorry for myself. A chest x ray led to a CT scan quickly followed by an MRI (scary stuff for a claustrophobic anxiety filled person).

Cause discovered, antibiotics administered and eventually my temperature was back under control again. 10 days after surgery I was being sent home with antibiotics to finish the course and lots of rest.

You would think that was the end of the saga, but no, my body had other ideas. 24 hours after getting home, my wound started to ooze. The ooze became a continuous dribble which we struggled to manage overnight. The next morning we headed off to our urgent treatment centre who sent us back to the main hospital for help. After lots of blood tests, swabs and faffing, a wound infection was diagnosed and yet more antibiotics prescribed. Dressing after dressing was swamped, so a surgeon came and removed some staples, opened up the infected end and gave it a thorough clean out. That dressing got swamped again so back to the hospital we went where they fitted a drainage bag (delightful!) and sent me home.

I’m now in the care of the lovely nursing team at my GP’s and although I still have a hole in my tummy I’m hopeful that I’m finally on the road to recovery. The remaining staples have been removed and they are seeing me daily to change my dressing and give me a clean up. I am forever grateful to our amazing NHS who looked after me (they need more staff on the ‘shop floor’ but that’s a post for another time) and I sincerely hope I don’t need their help again anytime soon!

Food Festivals and village markets

It’s Monday, and it’s feet up day (although I’m struggling to relax).

After a busy weekend attending Crayke Village Market and Saltburn Food Festival, I need to relax though.  It seems you all love our new humour range and I am almost at the point where I need to restock for the third time – thank you if you were there supporting our small business.  Sunday in particular was a very long day, we got up about half 6 and finally arrived home 13 hours later.  Of course it was takeaway for tea, not that any of us had the energy to eat it!

We were next to the fantastic Lemontop Gin yesterday, and I just had to reward myself for all my hard work last night.  It is highly recommended!  I’m now on the hunt for more cream soda to mix it with.

So, next weekend is another busy one, with a village market and another long Sunday (just a bit closer to home) with the fantastic Festival on the Flatts.  I’m hoping the humour range proves just as popular with the locals!

Pilates – I thought you said pie and lattes!

Yes, as expected, this new card design was by far the best seller at Crayke Village Market today. We only have one left in stock (at time of posting) so a restock order will be happening soon.

First we have our guest stall at Hovingham Village Market to prep for. I’m so excited to be invited as Hovingham is such a tranquil and picturesque village, a dream retirement location for us in an ideal world! The market is a thriving event in the region, where you will find an eclectic mix of local artisans and businesses from food and drink to crafts and homewares.

If this one goes well we may be invited to add it to our regular markets. In fact, July is a busy month for us, with Hovingham, Sheriff Hutton, Crayke and Saltburn Food Festival on the calendar. Full details of all our upcoming events are shared on our socials.

Website back online

I panicked a little this morning at Crayke market when I got a notification to say my website was down. I had just added a video to TikTok, directing people to it! Thankfully it is now back up and running but please do get in touch if something isn’t working as it should.

I’m so happy with how everything is going, it’s lovely to be out selling face to face at so many local markets and events. August is shaping up to be just as busy and then we will be thinking of Christmas!

Easter crafts and our first market of 2024

A colleague recently asked me if I had any plans for Easter break.  Now my children are adults, I don’t have any need to think up fun ways to amuse them in a bid to save my sanity, so I thought about all the house management type jobs I have planned then responded with ‘no, not really’.

Of course that’s not strictly true, as I will be at Crayke Market over the two weeks off, but apart from that I will mostly be sorting the kitchen cupboards and getting rid of things we no longer need – oh, and relaxing as much as possible.

Duckling craft kit

If you are still looking for activities to do with your children, and the weather doesn’t cooperate, these cute craft kits might come in handy.  They come with everything you need to make the model and will keep older children (and adults) amused for hours.

Rabbit craft kit

I hope you do manage some days out in the sunshine too, as there will be lots of fun events happening in your area for Easter.  If you have any to share please reply with details below.
